Are you paying attention?

There’s a lot going on these days. For some of us that means focusing our attention on more than one thing at a time, sometimes even four, five, six or seven things at a time! What happens when our attention gets fractionated to that degree? What toll does it take?

Well, sometimes, without meaning to or even realizing it, we just shut off our awareness. We go into our heads, planning and organizing and trying to figure out how we’re going to do it all, to such a degree that we lose attention to all that is going on around us in the moment. We in essence, disconnect. We walk zombie like through our lives, without really connecting to anything or anyone because we’re so on overload. Sometimes we internalize so much, we even get sick.

It’s at these times of high stress, and disconnection, we run the risk of losing touch with all that matters most to us. We lose our own answers, we lose ourselves. We become more concerned about controlling what’s happening in our lives, than participating fully in our lives. The problem is not just that we’re busy, but that we’ve stopped paying attention to what’s going on in the moment. When the morning has passed without realizing where it went, when you’ve driven your car through ten stoplights without knowing how, when the end of the day comes and you can’t remember all that you’ve done, than this may be happening in your life.

Good news. You can wake up now if you want. Open your eyes to your surroundings. Take a breath. Enjoy the moment. Ground yourself in the details of all that you see. Look at the clouds in the sky, look into the face smiling at you from across the table, feel the water on your hands as you wash your dishes, see all the different cars on the road around you. And as you do this, let yourself smile at the knowledge that all you need to do, you are doing in this very moment. The next moment will come, and you will do the same. Each moment will connect and all that you need to accomplish will get accomplished.

That doesn’t mean you can’t keep a list of the five or six or seven things you need to get done. It just means that you allow yourself to accomplish each task one at a time and pay attention to each as you are doing it. Challenge yourself to do one thing at a time. See how much more efficient you are in the long run, because of your increased attentiveness. In paying attention to each moment you are in, each task you are participating in, you enable yourself to connect more fully to your life and to the lives of those around you. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

    You are so right! When I feel my body tense, I am aware that I am identifying with nothing and forgettting who I am–a wellspring of health and wellness and connected always to my source.

    1. That’s beautiful, Sue. Thank you for sharing your comment. Using an awareness of a body that’s tense to signal the need to take a breath and expand our attention to a fuller awareness of all that is within us and around us can be so helpful.
